Deal: £50 Escentual Gift Card for £30 at Buyapowa!

image

Just a heads up to an exciting co-buy currently on Buyapowa, you can currently get a £50 Escentual Gift Card for as low as £30 (the current price is £33) so you could save as much as £20! Escentual carry some great high-end brands, and a lot of these brands would never offer a discount like this so I couldn’t resist snapping this up!

I’ll be using mine to treat myself to some Vichy Skincare and maybe a Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blush, although I’m a little spoilt for choice!

If you’re interested in buying one of these gift cards for yourself you can do so here.

Liz Earle Botanical Shine Treatment

DSC_0365
Liz Earle don’t release hundreds of products every month so when they release something new, you know its going to be something worth trying! If you read this post you’ll know that I don’t use conditioners that contain silicones, and when looking for a hair treatment it can be hard to find one on the high street that isn’t full of them. So I was very excited to try one from a brand whose skincare I have had a lot of success with.
I have very thick, coloured treated hair, and at times I would be happy to just get a pair of scissors and hack it all off! So anything that makes it more manageable is a miracle worker as far as I’m concerned. You use this treatment in place of your conditioner, and I have been using it once or twice a week for the past couple of weeks.
I shampoo as normal, and get as much water out of my hair as I can, I then apply it through mid-lengths to ends and leave it for 10-30 minutes wrapped in a warm towel.
Liz Earle Botanical Shine Treatment
The texture is quite thick but it spreads easily through the hair, and when it comes to rinsing it off I feel like my hair has soaked up the product as opposed to it just sitting on top of the hair.
I then blow dry and straighten my hair as normal, and I find normally no matter how long I spend trying to tame my hair it will end up frizzy and wavy again. I found straightening my hair took a lot less time, and was much less of a chore. It also stayed a lot straighter into the next day (I should say I don’t use any straightening serums or balms, just an Indola Heat Protectant Spray )
This retails at £14.00 for 150ml, and considering the price of some hair treatments *cough* Moroccan Oil *cough* I think this is a fair price. Liz Earle always seem to price things right for the quality of product, and as someone who wouldn’t spend a fortune on hair care I would have no problem paying £14 for this.
This is becoming a staple in my routine and is a lovely way to treat you hair on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
You can find Liz Earle Haircare online direct from Liz Earle, they’re flagship stores or John Lewis counters.

Swatched: MUA Out There Plumping Lipgloss in Nude

DSC_0284

DSC_0286

DSC_0290

I’m very picky with lipgloss, so when I find one I like it tends to stay in my make-up bag for weeks. MUA’s Out There Lipgloss in Nude is a very wearable translucent nude, I have quite pigmented, blue toned lips so I find this brings some life back to my lips and stops them looking dead. I don’t find it too be gloopy or sticky, and it lasts a decent amount of time before I need to reapply (although it doesn’t survive eating – but I’m yet to find a lip gloss that does) As for the plumping aspect, I haven’t noticed anything other than a tingle on application, but I am happy with the size of my lips and don’t really care for the ‘bee stung’ look.

I really like the packaging, compared to the older MUA glosses, its a lot sleeker and more practical. There’s quite a good shade range, so definitely worth checking out.

These lipglosses are a snip at £2 each and are great if you don’t want to spend a fortune on lipgloss.

*Disclaimer* I was gifted this item as part of MUA’s 12 Days of Christmas blog feature. This does not affect my opinion.

Get Beautiful Skin with No7 Beautiful Skin BB Cream

DSC_0228

Since trying Boots 17’s BB Cream I’ve been rethinking the way I use foundation. I love my Estee Lauder Double Wear but the weather has been playing havoc with my skin and my usually oily skin has been getting dry and dull. So I was very excited to hear that No7’s BB Cream would come in three different formulations targeted at different skin types. I had a No7 Voucher burning a hole in my pocket a couple of weeks ago and picked up a tube of the Normal/Oily BB Cream.

‘Take off those winter layers and reveal your outer beauty this spring with new No7 Beautiful Skin BB Cream. Its unique 3-in-1 formula evens and enhances skin tone and disguises imperfections, while the nutrient-enriched formula helps to banish blemishes.

And with the added protective power of SPF 15 and 5 * UVA technology to help skin stay youthful, BB is the only way to wear this season’s must-have essential - perfectly-pared back, beautiful skin.

For Normal / Oily Skin’

It comes in two shades (Fair + Medium) and although I would of like to have seen a few more shades the Fair is a pretty good match for my skin. It has an SPF of 15 and 5* UVA protection, which is great as I can never remember to put sunscreen on when it’s cold out!

DSC_0229

I been experimenting with how to wear and apply this and I get the best results for me by mixing about 2/3’s with a 1/3 of Double Wear and apply it with my MAC 129 (but whatever flat foundation brush you like would work just as well) and then to blend it fully I buff it in with a MAC 187 (but again any stippling brush would work) I find this way gives me the coverage I need but stops my skin looking dull, and prevents the Double Wear clinging to dry patches.

DSC_0232

DSC_0234

Although I do wear this with Double Wear to work, if I’m not at work and don’t want to wear such heavy make – up I will wear this alone, apply it with fingers with some MAC MSF on top. After applying it has quite a dewy finish, but it sets down to a natural semi-matte finish. The coverage is good, I still need to use concealer as I have quite bad acne scarring.

You can use this with or without a moisturiser, but as I find my skin gets oilier when it’s dehydrated I have been using it on top of Liz Earle’s Skin Repair, and I don’t find that my skin gets oily, and I haven’t suffered with any breakouts (also due to a change in skincare but more on that later)

I can’t sing the praises of this products enough. For me I find it better suited than the 17 BB Cream, so I don’t mind that it’s a bit more pricey. I can’t speak for the other two formulations but if you have oily/combination skin, this would be a great and versatile product to try.

No7 Beautiful Skin BB Cream retails at £12.95 (I used a £5 No7 voucher) and is available at Boots.

NOTD: Leighton Denny Doing Time

Leighton Denny Doing Time 2

Leighton Denny Doing Time

DSC_0314

I got this a while ago in a set from T K Maxx, and it’s a great quality polish. It’s an olive green with a fine golden shimmer. It’s opaque in two coats, the first coat dried quickly but I sped up the drying time of the second by using the Leighton Denny Miracle Drops, which were also in the kit.

I’m not one to spend £10 + on a polish (Leighton Denny Polishes retail at £11) , so if you like the look of Leighton Denny’s polishes I recommend looking in T K Maxx or watching out for his shows on QVC, which often have special prices on Duos and Collections.

Going SLS and Silicone Free : Haircare

SLS Free Haircare

After talking to Liloo (@tsunimee) on Twitter about the benefits of SLS and Silicone free hair products, she suggested I write a post about it, and as it’s something I feel strongly about and has changed my routine, I am more than happy to oblige!

Since I was about 12 I have bleached, highlighted and dyed my hair pretty much every colour imaginable, add that to the fact that I used to straighten my hair daily and have a lot of very thick, unruly hair and I’m sure you can imagine that my hair was fairly troublesome. I didn’t really put much thought into what shampoo and conditioner I used, other than picking what was on offer or smelled nice. I didn’t hear anything about SLS (Sodium Laureth/Laurel Sulphates) or Silicones until I started reading blogs.

About a year ago, I had completely had it with my hair. It would become greasy very quickly, my scalp was irritated and sore (and at time it would get so irritated it bled) and dandruff was a regular irritation. At first I tried using harsher medicated products, which worked for a while, but eventually my hair and scalp would return to the same awful condition.

I had read a lot about the SLS and how harsh it is on skin, although it is the foaming agent found in almost every shampoo, shower gel and face wash on the market it is actually a skin irritant. Often brands that market themselves as being kind to skin (Simple and Sanex I’m looking at you!) still included the ingredient.

I was willing to give anything a go at this point, so I marched myself to Boots and bought a Naked Shampoo and Conditioner. I’ve used most of the Naked range, but my favourite is the Mild Shampoo for Sensitive Scalps. If you want to try one of the Naked Shampoos, I would recommend either this or the one for Coloured hair as both have fairly unoffending scents ( the Coloured Shampoo smells quite nice, the Mild smells quite herbal, but is fairly undetectable in use) and aren’t stripping. A couple of the shampoos in the range I have found to be too stripping, particularly the Anti – Dandruff one, but none have irritated my scalp.

I always tend to double shampoo with Naked shampoos, they foam up a lot better on the second wash. I’ll use a small amount to quickly go over my hair, rinse it then shampoo properly. I find this gives me the results I want and enough foam to think that it’s actually cleaning my hair.

As for Silicone, if your hair is feeling weighed down, or gets greasy really easily, it could be that you have product build up from all the silicone in your conditioner. Most people’s automatic reaction to product build up is to use an SLS heavy stripping shampoo, and follow up with more conditioner. It’s a vicious circle!

Silicones are the ingredient that give you conditioner slip and make it feel like your hair is instantly softer. It seems to me that a lot of brands use silicone as it gives the consumer ‘instant gratification’ and will lead them to repurchase it.

My conditioner of choice is The Body Shop’s Banana Conditioner (£4) which I find to be very moisturising without making my hair greasy. It has a very thick consistency, and doesn’t have a lot of slip to it so you will need to massage it in properly. It smells amazing, like foam bananas, and the smell really brightens my day. As it lacks the slip that you might be used to the temptation is to use more than you need, but there is no need to if you work it into the hair.

There are other brands that favour natural ingredients, and if you want to spend a bit more money Liz Earle Shampoo and Condtioner’s are gorgeous, and retail at £8.00 (link) and L’oreal will soon be releasing a range that is free from nasties. If you are having any sort of problems with you hair or especially your scalp, trying a more gentle way of shampoo and conditioning might be the way to go.

Do you use SLS/Silicones? Have you recently gone SLS/Silicone free? Share your experiences!

Clinique Mascara Swap at Boots

Just a quick heads up if you don’t already know, Boots are doing the Mascara swap again. Just take any mascara (it can be empty!) into your nearest Boots with a Clinique counter for your free sample, I went on Sunday and my Boots still had plenty of samples left. I opted for High Lengths, as I had already tried High Impact and don’t really like it.

If you have short or straight lashes and want a lengthening boost, I’d go for High Lengths, if volumes you main concern High Impact is great at thickening lashes. Also these samples are pretty generous, I’ve had a few from GWP’s and they last a good few months, so well worth making a visit too Boots for!

Which will you be picking up?

Marla Singer Inspired FOTD

Marla Singer FOTD copy
I did this look after watching this video by Sam of Pixiwoo. It’s not for everyone, as it isn’t really a flattering look, its pale and the shading around the eyes can make you look pretty tired. It’s quite a messy look, as Sam states in the video there isn’t any point trying to be neat with it as I’m sure anyone that has seen Fight Club will know, Marla’s make-up wasn’t neat.

Quick Pick: Rituals Hanami Heaven Bath Oil

DSC_0160

DSC_0164

I’ve been intrigued by bath oils for a while, although they always seemed fairly expensive. But when I realised how much I spend on Lush products that only last one bath, I realised buying a slightly more pricey Bath Oil that will last me a decent amount of baths would be a good investment.

Since falling in love with with Rituals Magic Touch Body Cream, I have become obsessed with the scent and when I saw the bath oil with the same gorgeous light scent at 30% off I had to buy it. I’ve been using this for a couple of weeks, alternating it with my Lush sale products. You only need to use a small amount for the bath water to turn a milky colour, and I find it makes the water very moisturising and the scent is very relaxing, but not too heavy or overpowering.

As this is so moisturising I find it perfect for those times when you want to have a really good body scrub or shave your legs, things that normally leave my skin dry, and aggravated, but when I use this my skin feels soft, smooth and moisturised.

Rituals Bath Oil is available from Rituals and John Lewis priced at £8.05

Sundays Summary

DSC_2532

1. I can’t move right now because I’m so full from the massive roast dinner I’ve eaten. In fact I only managed to pull myself of the sofa because I wanted to blog! Had a lovely Sunday today, didn’t wake up till 10, and then went for a long walk along the canal with Nik and Jenny, back in time to make dinner.

2. I’ve finished my first product towards my Project Pan this week, it was MAC’s Blanc Type. One of the first neutral eyeshadows I bought myself, it’s a no fuss matte beige. I don’t think I’ll repurchase it when my Project Pan is over as I’ve got a lot of similar shades.

3.I’m off work now till Saturday, and it’s great to just relax and do absolutely nothing. It also means I’ve got more time to blog, and schedule posts, so if there is anything you would like to see over the next few weeks please let me know!

4.Jenny’s got to go to the vets on Tuesday, we noticed not long after we adopted her that her teeth were in very bad shape so she is going to go and have them descaled. I’m very nervous about leaving her as she is always at my side and I’m worried about her getting nervous. She might have to have a few teeth out but hopefully it will stop them bothering her! If you have a dog, I urge you to look after they’re teeth from the start, as Jenny’s previous owner obviously didn’t and it can make her very uncomfortable.

I hope you’re all enjoying your Sundays, and have had a good week!

Glossy Box for Men

glossybox for men 2

Glossybox for men

Glossy Box for Men works in much the same way as the womens version, the only difference being that the guys get seven products, on a quarterly basis rather than monthly. It costs £15 (plus £2.95 P+P) and I couldn’t resist signing Nik up to it.  There are only 5 products pictured, as he used the other two up before I got chance to take a photograph!

The above statement is not fair, my girlfriend thinks she can give me a box of goodies and not expect me to use it, does she ? Really ? REALLY ?

Anyways, firstly the not great products. The Hair and Body Shampoo by Goldwell was not really to my liking, it didn’t really clean my hair or my body and left a slight residue on my scalp. Not what you want before going out… To be honest, that was the only really bad point to this box.

The Goldwell Lagoom Jam was a godsend. Put it on at 6pm, massive office party, where I was mingling, networking and politicking my arse off, all the while with perfect hold, staying till I went back to my hotel room at 5:30am ! I got two fragrances, both of which, Yves Saint Laurent L’Homme and  and La Nuit De La Homme, I am a big fan of. Clean, crisp and both very refreshing. Nuit edges it for me as it has a sense of grandeur which goes well with my ego. I might drop a subtle hint to the good lady as a Valentine’s Day present.

Now, the Shaveworks Cool Fix gel was very calming and soothed my skin well, no razor burn, no soreness. The Monu Vitru Body Wash was not as great as the other products in this box but still quite good. Left me feeling clean and fresh but wasn’t much more special than your random upper-market men's shower gels. The Murad Clarifying mask was.. Well, I’m not a big fan of these masks so as good as it was (it made my skin soft and clear) it wasn’t 100%. It’s like drinking real ale. Great for an occasional swift pint but not for a full night out. These three products were good but I wouldn’t buy any of these especially as I have products I have used in the past.

The real killer in this box, though, has to be the Energy Rub. This may possibly be worth the 15 pounds (plus 2.95 p+p) alone. It does the job it is made to do better than any of the other products. Soothes your muscles, relaxes your body, makes you calmer and refreshed at the same time.

To sum up, if I was ranking these products in order of how good they are, Gold would go to the Energy Rub, Silver to the Lagoom Jam and Bronze to La Nuit De La Homme. I’m probably going to buy the Energy Rub as I have 10% off online, and I may also invest in some other products similar to this as they have been quite great.

So there we have, Nik will be keeping his subscription! Do the men in your life subscribe to Glossybox? Would it appeal to them?

One Stop Plus Clothing

cardigan

OneStopPlus.co.uk is a site that makes a great range of plus size fashion available in one place. I’m sure I’m not the only one that finds shopping on the high street for anything bigger than a size 12 a nightmare. High Street stores provide sizes to fit, but often I can’t find styles that suit me, especially as I’m also quite tall.

When I began to become unsatisfied with the highstreet I started looking online, who also do a range for plus size, ASOS Curve, but again this was unsuitable, as the smallest size in Curve is 20! So they expect the styles aimed at an 8/10 to suit those of us that are a 14/16 or 18. I often find in these cases that there is no sense of shape to the clothes, so if something will fit around the bust it will be around the waist. We are not all straight up and down!

When I was offered the chance to try something from the range I jumped at the chance, and when I saw that they stocked La Redoute’s Creation range I was even more excited! I’ve always loved the simple shapes and colours that you can expect from La Redoute, also pretending to be some elegant and effortless French fashionista can’t hurt, can it?

I was sent a gorgeous knit cardigan, and I haven’t stopped wearing it since. It’s a gorgeous chunky knit, with three quarter length sleeves and is the perfect length for me. I’ve been pairing this with leggings and tunics, or over a smart dress to make it a bit more daytime friendly. It’s available in a range of beautiful colours, including a lovely purple shade.

The site stocks a good range of clothes and brands, also selling shoes, lingerie and menswear. My only criticism of the site would be that some of the ranges, don’t cater for those wanting ‘fast fashion’ but as I tend to wear more simple, classic shapes this wouldn’t stop me shopping there. I’ve already got my eye on some of their wide leg boots!

You can shop all of One Stop Plus’s range for Size 14-36 at http://www.onestopplus.co.uk/, the Cardigan I received retails at £21.00.

Disclaimer: I received this Cardigan for review, this does not affect my opinion.

DSC_0200

I think I may have found my perfect nude polish. I received this in a goody bag from winning a competition on 17’s Facebook page, and when I saw it I was a bit ‘meh’ about the shade, in the bottle it just looks like your average neutral polish. On the nail however, I love the colour, it’s a beautiful nude with enough pink and mauve in it that it doesn’t make my hands look dead.

I’ve used 3 coats here, but could of got away with 2. This is a great colour for putting on when you’re not sure what you are going to be wearing or want something simple for work.

I’m Starting a Project 20 Pan!

Last year I didn’t really think about how much money I was spending on make-up, and would often put things into my basket at Boots or order things online without even considering whether I needed it or not. So as you can imagine I have developed a fairly large stash of products. The amount of eyeshadow I have in particular is ridiculous,  I don’t know how I’m ever going to ever going to use them up!

I will still be repurchasing foundation/concealer/powder if I run out and any skincare that I run out of.

I’m also hoping that this will make my blog a little more interesting and force me to do different post than just reviews and hauls!

Sundays Summary

DSC_0169
1. I had a great New Year and spent New Years Eve to the Bank Holiday Monday relaxing with Nik, my sister and her boyfriend. We did go out for a couple of hours, but I had more fun at home! We all rang in the New Year hangover free, and enjoyed a massive roast dinner and lots of movies slouched on the sofa.
2. Nik spent last night at a work party, so me and Jenny got comfy on the sofa and ordered in. After a week full of 4.30am alarms I really needed to just veg out on the sofa and not move! I spent a bit of time doing something Nik hates, watching QVC. I find I can put QVC Beauty on and not turn it off for hours! I never buy anything but I love listening to people ramble about beauty products!
3. I haven’t really done much sale shopping this week other than the New CID Set, and some Rituals Bath Oil that has the same gorgeous Rice Milk and Cherry Blossom scent as the Body Cream I mentioned here. My favourite purchase this week has got to be two Large Housewarmer Yankee Candles, one Christmas Cookie + one Christmas Cupcake that were both reduced to an amazing £9.50 in Leicester’s House of Fraser Outlet, I love having my whole house smell like gorgeous, sugary goodies!
4. Jenny’s been with us for three weeks now and I think she’s really starting to settle in, she’s very attached to me and follows me round all day! I’ve really missed having a dog around since moving out of my parents house and it’s lovely to come home and have her be so excited to see me! Any time I’ve blogged this week she has been sat on my knee, with her front paws on my desk, occasionally hitting the space key! Maybe she wants to do a guest post!
I hope you’ve all had a good week and are having a great start to the year!

Firstly apologies for the psycho eyes and unruly brows (I’ve lost my Tweezermans! *sob*), I was given this palette by my boyfriend for Christmas, as he knows I would never spend that much in a palette for myself. This is my first time with Urban Decay eyeshadows and I’m loving them so far, they’re all shimmer/glitter shades and they have such a gorgeous easy to blend texture.

I’ll be doing a full review and swatches soon, but so far I’m in love with this palette. I also haven’t put down the 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Liner that came included in the palette and have also bought another, it a different colour. Yep, it’s that good! It stays on on from when I put my make-up on in the morning at 4.30am till I take it off before bed, which in the current weather it’s nothing short of amazing!

In this FOTD I used Blue Bender and Hijack, along with the 24/7 Waterproof Liner and the Supercurl Curling Mascara that were included in the palette.

If you thinking about getting this palette, now’s a good time, as it is limited edition and can now be found in Debenhams for £36.80.

I needed a little post Christmas pick me up today, do when I finished work I had a wander round town and this is one of the things I picked up. I found this in TK Maxx for the great price of £14.99. It includes three full size products; i-shadow in Oman, i-line in Black and i-volumise in Black. New CID has been on my radar since I fell in love with the lipstick I received in my Carmine box, and this set is of the same great quality.

There was a few more sets like this in Leicester’s TK Maxx, including a Natural and a Smokey Kit. If you want to try something from New CID these sets are a great and fairly inexpensive way to get a feel for the brand. If there’s anything you would like a full review of let me know in the comments!

Have you tried New CID Cosmetics? Got the January blues yet?

Rituals Magic Touch Ultra Whipped Body Cream

DSC_0119“Special technology makes this whipped cream easy to apply, while its rich and velvety formula nourishes and helps strengthen the skin.
Unique blend containing antioxidants, Vitamin E and the ingredient Centella Asiatica, which helps strengthen your skin.”

I got this in a gift set that I received free when buying two others as Christmas gifts. Since receiving a Rituals Foaming Shower Gel in my Glossybox I’ve become very interested in the brand and I spent a long time in the Leicester branch playing with all the products. I picked up a lot of gifts in there but couldn’t resist keeping one myself, they were 3 for 2 after all!

This moisturiser is lovely for the when you don’t want to spend ages rubbing thick creams in, but still want a decent kick of moisture. It’s described as ‘whipped’ and although it looks like a body butter/heavy cream it has the light texture of a mousse and sinks in very quickly leaving no residue.

This product is scented, but it is a very light fragrance that isn’t to sweet/floral and leaves skin smelling fresh all day.

I’ve been using this daily since I got it, and I can’t see it running out for a while. I’ll definitely be repurchasing this when I run out.

Magic Touch Body Cream is available at House of Fraser and Rituals Stores and is priced at £13.50 for 200ml.

Sales Pick: No7 Midnight Enchantment Blush

No7 Blusher

No7 Midnight Enchantment Blush

Other than Lush the only shop I’ve been in since Christmas is Boots, when I spotted the No7 Winter Collection was all half price, I had to pick up the gorgeous embossed blusher. Originally priced at £13 you can now find this in Boots for £6.50, whilst stocks last.

It is made of three different shades, a plum brown, light rose pink and a white highlight, which when combined give a beautiful natural flush to the cheeks. All the shades contain shimmer but not so much that it is overpowering.

This is a lovely everyday blush, and would look gorgeous all year round. If you have £6.50 to spare, it would be well spent on this blush!

You can find No7 Midnight Enchantment Blush in Boots.
